Requirements

How to Download VPN Software

Macos
  1. All active University faculty, staff, and student employees have access to Boise State’s VPN service.
  2. Download the VPN software.
    If you’re on campus, download the VPN software using this link.
    If you’re off campus, download the VPN software using this link.
  3. Log in to the Boise State VPN service using your Boise State account. (If you are unable to log in, please contact the Help Desk for assistance.)
  4. Click the AnyConnect link.
  5. Click the Start AnyConnect link.
  6. The Boise State VPN software (Cisco AnyConnect) will install and connect your computer securely to the Boise State network.
  7. If you are using macOS Big Sur, you may be prompted to open System Preferences > Security & Privacy and select Allow to load the “Cisco AnyConnect Socket Filter”:
  8. If the automatic installation fails, click the “Windows Desktop” or “Mac OS X 10.6+” link to download and install the VPN software manually.

How to Use the VPN Software

Once you have the VPN software (Cisco AnyConnect) installed, here’s how to work securely and connect to the Boise State network:

  1. Connect to the Internet via Wi-Fi or cable like you always do.
  2. Launch the Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility software.
    Windows: Start > All Programs > Cisco > Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client > Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client
    Mac: Finder > Applications > Cisco > Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client
  3. Enter either the on-campus VPN address or the off-campus VPN address, depending on your location:
    On-campus VPN address: bsuvpn-oncampus.boisestate.edu
    Off-campus VPN address: bsuvpn-offcampus.boisestate.edu
  4. Sign in with your Boise State username and password.
  5. As of May 19, Boise State requires Duo multi-factor authentication when connecting to VPN. For information about enrolling and using Duo, visit the Multi-factor Authentication page.

Optional: Connect to Your Work Computer

You may use VPN in conjunction with Microsoft Remote Desktop to connect remotely to a Windows desktop or laptop computer.

How to set up external access with a VPN client on different operating systems.

This service is provided exclusively for employees of the JKU as well as its external partners and is currently not available to JKU students.

This guide explains how how to set up the client on a Windows system.

  1. Open https://vpn.jku.at in a browser of your choice.
  2. Log in with your JKU Username andJKU Password.
  3. Click on the 'Download for Windows' button in the center of the page.
  4. Download the file and open it to start the installation.
  5. Launch the client.
  6. Enter 'vpn.jku.at' and click on 'Connect'.
  7. Login with yourJKU UsernameandJKU Password.
    You can verify that you are connected via VPN with the Cisco AnyConnect symbol (ball with padlock) in the lower right corner of the taskbar or by opening the webpage https://ip.jku.at. The IP shown should be from the network VPN-pool.
  8. Any further VPN sessions can now be started without the browser by simply clicking the AnyConnect desktop icon.
  9. It is not necessary to log in via the browser again.

Linux

  1. Open https://vpn.jku.at in a browser of your choice.
  2. Log in with your JKU Username andJKU Password.
  3. Click on the 'Download for Linux' button in the center of the page.
  4. Download the file and run the installation script in a terminal.
    Terminal: sudo sh [Path]/vpnsetup.sh
  5. Launch the client.
  6. Enter 'vpn.jku.at' and click on 'Connect'.
  7. Login with yourJKU UsernameandJKU Password.
    You can verify that you are connected via VPN with the Cisco AnyConnect symbol (ball with padlock) in the lower right corner of the taskbar or by opening the webpage https://ip.jku.at. The IP shown should be from the network VPN-pool.
  8. From now on the client can be launched the same way as any other application.
  9. It is not necessary to log in via the browser again.

If you use macOS Big Sur, your have to permit twice Anyconnect System Extensions.

  • Permission to load/activate the System Extension 'Cisco Anyconnect Socket Filter' → this can be done via 'Security&Privacy'
  • Permission to activate the extension 'Filter component'

Android

  1. Download the 'Cisco AnyConnect' app from the Google Play store.
  2. Select Connections.
  3. Select 'Add new VPN connection'.
  4. Click on 'Description'. Enter 'JKU VPN'.
  5. Click 'Server Address'. Enter 'vpn.jku.at'.
  6. Afterwards, click on 'Done'.
  7. Enter your JKU Username (AK....) in the 'User name' field.
  8. Enter your JKU Password in the 'Password' field.
  9. Click 'OK'.
  10. Tick the 'I trust this app' checkbox.

  11. To complete the installation, click 'OK'.
  12. The VPN connection is active when 'Connected' is displayed.

iOS

Cisco Anyconnect For Mac Download

This guide explains how how to set up the client on an iOS system.

  1. Download the 'Cisco AnyConnect' app from the App Store.
  2. Click on 'Connections' and select 'Add VPN connection...'.
  3. Click on 'Description'. Enter 'JKU VPN'.
  4. Click 'Server Address'. Enter 'vpn.jku.at'.
  5. When done, click 'Save'.
  6. Activate the VPN connection and login with yourJKU Username and JKU Password.
  7. Then click on 'Connect'.
  8. The VPN connection is active when 'Connected' is displayed.
